02:15 PM :: Betty Pooka!
Oh yeah, did I mention this week's MP3 is a version of "Volare" done by Petty Booka? The best version of this song since Alex Chilton tackled it (to the ground). Check it out.

11:29 AM :: Nightclubbing.
Last night at the Siskel Film Center, we caught the first in a series of music documentaries featuring classic punk rock and New Wave performances taped in the 1970s and 1980s. The footage is from a NYC cable program called "Nightclubbing," and last night's program featured Blondie, Talking Heads and the Dead Boys performing at CBGB's. Some really amazing footage was on display, including: a 21-year-old Debbie Harry doing a smoldering version of "Little Girl Lies"; Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz looking like he was about 15 years old; TH doing a really great version of "96 Tears"; the Dead Boys drummer shouting in the middle of the set, "WHAT SONG ARE WE DOING?!"; and a high point that will be hard to top: Dead Boys singer Stiv Bators taking down his pants to display what I'm guessing were flea or bedbug bites on his legs (covering his naughty bits, of course, for the cameras), and then advising the audience, "Don't sleep at the Tropicana!"
It was a really fun show, and if you want to see it the Film Center is showing the program again Wednesday night at 8:00. The Film Center is showing a Nighclubbing episode every Sunday night this month; if you can only make one, catch the final show on May 29, which will be a best-of program and will include an appearance by the show's directors for a Q&A session after the show.
